Late CE is for MLO’s looking to make-up CE hours from previous years. As a licensed MLO the SAFE ACT requires you to complete annual continuing education. If you do not complete the required education for a period you must complete an NMLS approved SAFE Late CE course. This usually happens when an MLO is returning to the business an is required to satisfy any deficiencies for the last year they were licensed.
Late CE courses are configured such that upon completion course credit will be retroactively applied to a previous year depending on the needs of the particular MLO. States which do not allow an MLO to make-up a CE deficiency require the MLO to apply for a new license.
The application process for a new license requires the MLO to satisfy any CE deficiency for the last year in which they maintain an active license. The NMLS has a very specific course catalog that meets this requirement. If you are attempting to make up CE hours, either for the reinstatement period or were directed to take a late CE course by your state regulator pay close attention to any state-specific education requirements that you may need to satisfy.
