Renewing your MLO License

Renewal Requirements & Deadlines

All MLO (Mortgage License Originator) licenses must be renewed annually through the NMLS. Here’s what you need to know:

🔁 Annual Renewal Cycle

  • Renewal Deadline: Most states require completion by December 31st
  • Start Early: The renewal window typically opens November 1st
  • Required CE: 8 hours minimum of NMLS-approved continuing education, including:
    • 3 hours of federal law
    • 2 hours of ethics
    • 2 hours of non-traditional lending
    • 1 hour of electives (or state-specific)
  • MLOs who complete structured exam prep are 30–40% more likely to pass on the first attempt
  • Prep with MEC’s Exam Packages

⚠️Late Renewals

Missing the deadline may require Late CE, additional fees, and reactivation filings.
